The Friday Receipt
/You answered the urgent requests, moved the strategic initiatives forward, and said yes to the favors nobody else wanted—all year long.
But by the time your annual performance review is due, your mind is blank.
Memory is a lousy archivist. It holds on to the last crisis and quietly discards the wins. Waiting for leadership to notice your wins depends on someone else's attention, and their attention is already spoken for.
So keep a receipt. Every Friday, send yourself an email “Weekly Review” with two questions answered:
What did I accomplish this week?
Who did it impact?
Something shifts when you do this. The performance review gets easier, of course. More importantly, you start to see the shape of your work. You notice which weeks mattered. You notice who you're serving. You close the book on Friday and walk into Monday clear about where you stand and where you're going.
Then, when it’s performance review season, gather all your Weekly Review emails. Paste them into an AI tool and ask it to find the patterns: your biggest wins, the people you helped most, the themes that ran through your year. In a few minutes, you'll have a summary built on evidence you collected in real time, when the details were fresh and the impact was clear.
Try this AI prompt:
Here are my weekly accomplishment emails from this year. Summarize my top five accomplishments, who each one helped and how, and the themes that connect them. Write it in a confident, specific tone I can use in my performance review.
You won't need anyone to tell you what you did. You'll have the proof that tells a compelling story.
